Stock tank pools are popular with families — they are compact, affordable, and set up quickly. But parents rightly ask: are they actually safe for children? Here is an honest answer.
Are stock tank pools safe for kids?
Stock tank pools can be enjoyed by families but, like any pool or standing water, they are not inherently safe for young children and require strict, constant adult supervision and multiple layers of protection. There is always a drowning risk.
What safety measures should I have in place?
- Adult supervision at all times when children are in or near the pool — no exceptions
- Pool barrier or fencing around the pool when it is not in use
- Pool cover when the pool is unattended
- Teach children pool rules: no running, no pushing, no unsupervised access
What age is appropriate for a stock tank pool?
There is no universal minimum age — it depends on the child and the supervision in place. Toddlers and non-swimmers should only enter the pool with an adult actively in the water with them. Older children who can swim independently still require adult supervision nearby.
Is the water safe? What about the galvanized metal?
With proper water chemistry maintained (chlorine 1–3 ppm, pH 7.2–7.6), stock tank pool water is safe for recreational use. New galvanized tanks do leach some zinc into the water initially, which decreases significantly after the first season. Maintaining proper pH minimizes this.
What about the pump and drain?
The STPP pump strainer assemblies are designed to prevent entrapment. We recommend installing a strainer cover as standard practice for any pool used by children.
